What is TRILLOQUY?
Garrett McQueen had long been unhappy with the culture surrounding "classical music", so in 2016 he left his career as a professional bassoonist to help shift the genre forward by way of broadcast media. Along the way, he discovered conversations within the world of "classical music" that deserved more attention. With the help of his friend and colleague, Scott Blankenship, the two created TRILLOQUY.
Every week, Garrett and Scott select news stories and events to connect with pieces of music that help bring light to the issues of today while simultaneously challenging and deconstructing the aural definitions of "classical" music. TRILLOQUY also features interviews with special guests, which have included insights and conversations with entrepreneurs, social justice activists, "classical" musicians, and Emmy, Grammy, and Pulitzer Prize Award-winners. In 2021, TRILLOQUY was named by the New York Times as a standout podcast, and one that is "required listening for industry leaders and listeners alike".
Season one's structure was inspired by a loose sonata allegro form: introduction/exposition (host conversation), development (guest interviews), recapitulation/conclusion. For season two, Garrett and Scott present each opus in a four-movement structure: Accidentals (the week in events, brought with a sharp, flat, or natural), Strike a Chord (our must-hears for the week), Take a Stand (guest conversations/interviews), and the TRILLOQUY (the weekly "true" and "real" message).
Season three is produced "live to tape" from STUDIO G with the second movement (previously "Strike a Chord") named, "The Second Ending".
From May of 2019 to April of 2020, TRILLOQUY was a product of American Public Media, based in Saint Paul, MN. Today, TRILLOQUY is a brand, a project, and an initiative led by its Executive Producer, Garrett McQueen.
